Three Steps for Preventing Suicide in Youth |
| |
Many of the signs psychiatrists and psychologists have identified for depression, anxiety, trauma, other disorders and suicide risk factors are discussed in the program. Early and appropriate treatment for children can address Idaho's high suicide rate among young people. Untreated, these illnesses can result in behavioral problems at school, difficulty learning, low self-esteem, poor school attendance and grades, impaired social development, difficulties with law enforcement, and even death.
This training is designed to train adult gatekeepers on the signs and symptoms of mental illness in children and youth, suicide risk assessment and intervention, the latest scientific information on childhood mental disorders and the impacts of trauma. Gatekeepers include parents and families, professionals, school faculty and staff, and others who care for or about Idaho's children.

Meaningful Youth Involvement
|
 |
Often times, provides involved in children's mental health service or treatment planning overlook the importance youth involvement has on a youth's overall treatment success. These plans, which are often written with little input or no buy-in from the youth people, have typically shown a small chance of success.
Accordingly, this workshop will include topics such as: why youth involvement is an essential part of the treatment process, ideas on how to increase meaningful youth participation in collaborative team planning, discuss the stigma that youth often experience from providers when attempting to become a positive part in their treatment process, etc.
With the help of members from the Idaho Youth Council, attendees will have the opportunity to hear firsthand experience of both the struggles and positive experiences they each have had when being a youth participant.

Introduction to IEP's |
 |
Introduction to IEP is a workshop in which we focused on important skills that concentrate on (parent) difficulties most significant in the children’s mental health arena. When first dealing with an individualized education plan (IEP), parents often find themselves lost in a whirlwind of meetings, regulations, and emotions involved when trying to complete and follow their child’s IEP.
This workshop underlined initial information needed for successful planning and begins with specific strategies to help each parent be an essential part of their child’s IEP team. By learning to anticipate possible problems, parents can help in both preventing and resolving conflicts during IEP team meetings. In this workshop participants received the following information:
- Information on school’s and your rights
- How to prepare for an IEP
- How to establish partnerships in an IEP environment
- Sample IEP experiences
- Helpful preparation forms, checklists, and organizational folders

The Jeff D. Federal Class Action Lawsuit: 26 Years and Counting |
|
This live interactive seeion was broadcasted to locations throughout Idaho. Filed 26 years ago on behalf of a 17-year-old wrongly locked up with sex offenders, the Jeff D. lawsuit against the state of Idaho originally was filed to views and manners of serving children with Serious Emotional Disorder's (SED) who were placed in state hospitals. The lawsuit was expanded to include the state's lack of community-based services to keep children from having to be placed out of their homes.
The objective of this training was to present background to Idaho professionals about the lawsuit by providing information from both the State and Plainfiffs: highlighting how the lawsuit has thus far affected children's mental health in the state and how the court's decision may affect the future of children's mental health.
Presenters:
Plaintiff Atoorney: Howard A. Belodoff; Defendant Attorney: Jodi Carpenter; Parent: Barbara Hill

SIBSHOPS |
| |
Sib shops are workshops specifically for brothers and sisters of a child with special needs. Often times siblings feels left out and misunderstand their brother or sister's diagnosis. One young boy said, "After my brother gets over ADHD we are going on a family vacation this summer."
Sometimes siblings deal with unique feelings of their own: fierce loyalty to a sister or brother, but embarrassment over their behavior. Sib Shops will touch on all of these issues. Most importantly the workshop involves play because siblings often grow up faster than other kids their age.
Please call our office at 1.800.905.3436 if you would like more information about how you can start a Sibshops in your area. |
