Walkout Stigma
The view from another's shoes
Each day thousands of Idaho youth wake-up facing difficult mental health issues. Studies indicate that 2/3 of all young people with mental health problems are not receiving the help they need; which means that over 60,000 young people in Idaho may not be getting the help or support they need. In addition, the stigma related to having a mental health diagnosis is often agonizing for youth in their middle and high school years. These youth frequently experience a less accepting school and community environment; this atmosphere may be largely attributed to lack of knowledge and/or information and misinformation thru media sources. The Walkout Stigma campaign both is a literal and influential way to help create awareness about children's mental health in your community and throughout the state of Idaho.

Changing Idaho: One Community at a Time!
We encourage Idaho residents to strengthen and educate your community through your own innovative social actions. We rely on individuals, schools, and organizations across our great state to rally the people within their communities to come together to educate others about mental illness and promote the fight against the stigma related to living with a diagnosis. When creating your own campaign, you personally participate in our uphill effort in pursuit of a better educated more supportive community, Idaho, world. We believe something powerful happens when people contribute their time using their own ideas, fueled with energy and enthusiasm, to raise money and awareness for our cause.

Children's Mental Health Awareness Day–May of Each Year
Caring for Every Child's Mental Health
National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day is a key strategy of the Caring for Every Child's Mental Health Campaign (the Campaign), which is part of the Public Awareness and Support Strategic Initiative by SAMHSA, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. The Campaign seeks to raise awareness about the importance of children's mental health and that positive mental health is essential to a child's healthy development from birth. Each year the national themes focus is slightly altered but the key strategy has always been to:

  • raise awareness of the efficacy of community-based mental health services for children, youth, and their families;
  • demonstrate how children's mental health initiatives promote positive youth development, recovery, and resilience; and
  • show how children and youth with mental health needs thrive in their communities.

We encourage those interested to plan your very own Children's Mental Health Awareness Day campaign in your community! There are many options for you, your group, or organization: mark the day with a community event, youth rally, social media campaign, and/or activity with youth to raise awareness about the importance of children's mental health.
Remember this campaign only rolls around once a year! Learn more about this campaign.
